Reassuring message from the Secretary of State for Education

Writer: Study SpaceStudy Space

On the 23rd of July 2024, Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson delivered a speech at the Embassy Education Conference.

In a speech, the new Secretary of State for Education outlines a vision for resetting relationships in education, emphasizing the importance of international partnerships. The speech addresses past mixed messages about international students, affirming that they are welcome and valued in the UK for their cultural and economic contributions. The Secretary highlights the UK’s commitment to supporting international students through graduate visas and managing migration carefully while fostering an inclusive and global outlook. The speech also underscores the benefits of international collaboration in education, stressing that such partnerships enhance creativity, innovation, and global understanding. The Secretary calls for genuine partnerships with countries worldwide to promote opportunities and tackle global challenges through education.

The speech offers reassurance for international students and recent graduates. It appears that there will be no changes to the current rules regarding the graduate visa, and recent graduates will still be able to remain in the UK. It is yet to be seen whether the newly elected government will incorporate any changes to the immigration rules in the context of university education.
