Understanding UK Boarding Schools

Boarding schools provide both education and full-time residential accommodation for students. Pupils live on campus during term time, creating a close-knit community atmosphere. There are approximately 500 boarding schools in the UK.

  • Age Range: UK boarding schools cater to students from around age 7 to 18. Some schools are 'prep' schools (primary), others 'senior' (secondary), and some offer the entire age range.

  • Curriculum: Most boarding schools follow the British national curriculum with a focus on core subjects like English, mathematics, and sciences. They also offer diverse elective choices.

  • Qualifications: Students typically work towards GCSEs (at around age 16) and A-Levels (at age 18), which are essential for university entrance.

Boarding school graduates overwhelmingly progress to higher education, with many attending prestigious universities in the UK and worldwide.

Admissions for International Students

  • Academic Requirements: Schools look for strong academic records in previous school reports and may require entrance examinations in areas like English and mathematics.

  • English Proficiency: Most schools require a certain level of English language proficiency, often assessed through tests like IELTS or TOEFL.

  • Visa: International students (outside of the European Economic Area and Switzerland) typically require a Child Student Visa to study at a UK boarding school. Applying for this visa is a necessary part of the admissions process.

  • Other Requirements: Interviews, personal statements, and references are common parts of the admissions process. Schools want well-rounded students with the potential to thrive in the boarding environment.

Fees

Boarding school fees in the UK vary considerably. Factors include the reputation of the school, location, and facilities. Average fees for private boarding schools are around £40,000, but there is a huge range within those figures.

Additional costs to consider are, for example, uniforms, extra-curricular activities, and travel.
